1942 * Willie Carson, Scottish-born jockey who was five-time English champion jockey.

1953 * Griff Rhys Jones, British comedy actor and writer.

1959 The Sound of Music was performed for the first time on Broadway.

1960 Gilbert Harding, the TV personality with a reputation for outspokenness died.

1961 * Frank Bruno, English heavyweight boxer.

1965 The USSR launched the Venus III unmanned spacecraft that eventually landed on Venus.

1976 Seven men who took part in an £8m bank robbery on the Bank of America in Mayfair, London, received jail terms totalling nearly 100 years.
