1971 Former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev died at age 77.
1973 President Salvador Allende of Chile was overthrown and died in
a military coup.
1978 Bulgarian defector Georgi Markov was killed in London by a
poisoned umbrella point.
1980 The famous Marlborough diamond was stolen from a London
jewellers in a bold £1m robbery.
1997 In Scotland, voters approved the establishment of a parliament
to run their domestic affairs.
2001 Two hijacked commercial jets were crashed by terrorists into
the north and south towers of the World Trade Centre in New York
City, causing the collapse of both towers. A short while later,
another plane was crashed into the Pentagon, and fourth into a field
near Shanksville, Pa. 3000 people were killed.
2003 The Swedish Foreign Minister, Anna Lindh, died of her injuries
after she was stabbed in a Stockholm department store.
2005 Thirty-eight years of military rule came to an end in Gaza as
Israeli soldiers lowered the flag and pulled out.
