1972 Rhodesia was thrown out of the Munich Olympic Games.
1978 The Kenyan president, Jomo Kenyatta, died aged 89 at his home
in Mombasa.
1985 A British Boeing 737 plane burst into flames at Manchester
Airport killing 55 people.
1986 Following allegations he was associating with criminals. Deputy
chief constable of Greater Manchester police John Stalker was
cleared of misconduct.
1999 A 54-year-old farmer Tony Martin, was arrested after a
suspected burglar was killed at a farmhouse in Norfolk.
