1988 The MP for Yeovil, Paddy Ashdown, was elected the first leader
of the new Social and Liberal Democrat Party.
2000 The final phase of the Good Friday peace accord. 52 republican
and 26 loyalist paramilitaries imprisoned for terrorist offences,
were freed from the Maze prison in Northern Ireland.
2005 The IRA formally ordered an end to its armed campaign and said
it will pursue exclusively peaceful means.
