returned to London after four years in a Soviet jail.
1974 The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that President Richard
Nixon had to turn over White House tapes to the Watergate special
prosecutor.
1987 Former deputy chair of the Conservative Party Jeffrey Archer
was awarded record libel damages of £500,000 plus up to £700,000
costs, at the High Court.
2000 Loyalist paramilitary hit man Michael Stone was released from
the Maze prison in Northern Ireland. He was given a 684-year
sentence in 1989 for six murders and five attempted murders, but was
set free as part of the Good Friday peace agreement.
