at Mount McGregor, New York aged 63.
1888 * Raymond Chandler, US novelist who wrote The Big Sleep (1939).
1913 * Michael Foot, British Labour Party leader from 1980-1983.
1914 Austria and Hungary issued an ultimatum to Serbia after the
assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, precipitating World War I.
1933 * Richard Rogers, English architect who designed the Pompidou
Centre in Paris, France.
1940 Local Defence Volunteers were renamed by Winston Churchill as
the Home Guard.
1947 * David Essex, English singer and actor.
1952 In a bloodless coup, King Farouk of Egypt was deposed by
General Neguib. The monarchy was abolished and, for the first time
since the pharaohs, Egypt was again ruled by Egyptians.
1957 There were violent scenes around Britain as the strike by
busmen in the English regions entered its fourth day.
1967 British cyclist Tony Simpson died of heat exhaustion competing
in the Tour de France.
1974 The military government in Greece collapsed and the former
prime minister Constantine Karamanlis was invited to return from
self-imposed exile in Paris.
1986 Prince Andrew married Lady Sarah Ferguson at Westminster Abbey.
1997 Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic was sworn in as president
of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
1995 Britain sent 1,200 troops to relieve the besieged Bosnian
capital, Sarajevo.
1999 Colonel Eileen Collins became the first woman to command a US
space mission aboard the shuttle Columbia.
2005 About 100 people were killed in bomb attacks in the Egyptian
resort of Sharm al-Sheikh
