1900 The British Parliament proclaimed that as of 1st Jan 1901, the
six Australian colonies would be united as the Commonwealth of

1901 * Barbara Cartland, English romantic novelist of some 500
books.
1916 * Edward Heath, British Prime Minister from 1970-1974.
1937 * David Hockney, English painter/artist, famous for his
swimming pool paintings (1965).
1938 Gas masks issued to the civilian population of Britain in
anticipation of World War 2.
1956 * Tom Hanks, US comedy film actor.
1973 The Queen's representative, Prince Charles witnessed the final
lowering of the Union Jack and gold flag of the Bahamas being raised
on their Independence Day.
1982 A man "Mr Fagan" broke into Buckingham Palace and spent ten
minutes talking to the Queen in her bedroom. This was the sixth
breach of security at the Queen's London residence this year.
1984 A bolt of lightning set fire to the 700 year-old York Minster
cathedral in Britain.
1997 Boxer Mike Tyson was temporarily banned from boxing for biting
Evander Holyfield's ear.
