1936 * Kris Kristofferson, US singer, songwriter and actor who
starred in A Star is Born (1976).
1941 Hitler's German Army took the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin by
surprise as it begins a massive advance on Moscow. The invasion
broke the non-aggression pact signed by Germany and the Soviet Union
in 1939.
1949 * Meryl Streep, US actress who won an Oscar for the film
Sophie's Choice (1982).
1959 Directors of Harrods are urging shareholders to vote for a £34m
merger with Debenhams department chain. It is seen as a way of
cutting costs through pooling resources on buying goods and internal
administration.
1969 Singer-actress Judy Garland died.
1979 A jury cleared Jeremy Thorpe of the attempted murder of Norman
Scott. Mr Thorpe, who resigned as Liberal Party leader in 1976,
hailed his acquittal as "a complete vindication".
1981 Mark Chapman changed his plea to guilty and admitted that he
murdered John Lennon in December 1980. Lennon, 40, was shot several
times as he entered his luxury apartment building, the Dakota on
Manhattan's Upper West Side
1987 Actor-dancer-singer Fred Astaire died.
1995 British PM John Major resigned as Conservative leader to fight
a leadership contest.
2001 The Parole Board decided that after 8 years, the murderers of
James Bulger are to be released. Both boys were 10-years-old when
they led James Bulger from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside,
tortured and murdered him.
