1905 * Jean-Paul Sartre, French existentialist philosopher, novelist

1921 * Jane Russell, US actress who starred in the film The Outlaw

1945 The Japanese island of Okinawa finally fell to the Americans
after a long and bloody battle. It was estimated more than 90,000
Japanese troops were killed in the 82-day conflict.
1948 The first monogroove (long playing) record was unveiled by

1970 Tony Jacklin became the first British golfer to win the US Open

1978 Walking home with friend, William Hanna was killed in the
crossfire between Provisional IRA bombers and British security
forces at the Ballysillan post office depot in Belfast. Three
Provisional IRA members also died.
1982 * Prince William, eldest son of Prince Charles and Princess
Diana at St Mary's Hospital, in London.
1991 There was anger over British Gas chairman Robert Evans
accepting a pay increase of 66% which took his annual salary to
£370,000.
1993 English mathematician, Andrew Wiles proved Fermat's last
theorem. It seven years and 200 pages of calculations to prove the
350-year-old problem, which many mathematicians had declared was
unsolvable.
