1956 The former President of the United States, Harry Truman,

1961 * Alison Moyet, English singer who produced the album Alf
(1984).
1965 The British government announced that it will introduce a blood
alcohol limit for drivers with penalties for those caught above it.
1972 UK's worst air crash. A flight from London Heathrow to Brussels
crashed minutes after take-off killing all 118 people on board.
1975 The first North Sea Oil came ashore from a Liberian tanker at
BP's Isle of Gain refinery.
1979 US President Jimmy Carter and Leonid Brezhnev signed the SALT
treaty.
1983 Sally Ride became the first American woman in space.
1999 Police and protesters clashed at a demonstration against
capitalism in the centre of London's financial district. The rally
was timed to coincide with the start of a summit of the world's
richest countries in Germany.
