1900 The Boxer Rebellion began in China to end the domination by
foreigners.
1915 * Don Budge, US tennis champion, the first amateur to win 4

1944 The first V1 flying bomb landed in Southampton, England killing
3 people.
1956 The first European Soccer Cup won by Real Madrid who defeated
Stade de Reims 4-3.
1958 * Peter Scudamore, English champion jockey.
1967 The United Nations Security Council rejected Soviet demands for
an immediate vote to condemn Israel's aggression in the six-day war.
1978 Israeli troops completed their withdrawal from southern Lebanon
handing over many of their positions to a right-wing Christian
movement.
1981 Marcus Serjeant a 17 year old youth was arrested for shooting a
replica gun at the Queen as she rode past crowds in London. He fired
six blank cartridges before being overcome by a Guardsman and
police.
1983 The U.S. space probe Pioneer 10, launched in 1972, became the
first spacecraft to leave the solar system.
1986 Bandleader and clarinettist Benny Goodman died.
1996 Guernsey voted to legalise abortion, overturning a ban which
dated back to 1910. As the law currently stood, women found guilty
of having an abortion on the Channel Island faced life imprisonment.
Women who want a termination had to travel to the mainland for the
operation.
2000 The first meeting between President Kim Jong II of North Korea
and President Kim Dae Jung of South Korea occurred.
