1897 * Anthony Eden, British Prime Minister from 1955-1957.
1898 Emilio Aguinaldo, head of the Philippine nationalists,
proclaimed independence from Spain.
1920 * Peter Jones, English actor who narrated the TV series Hitch
Hikers Guide To the Galaxy.
1928 * Vic Damone, US singer and actor who appeared in Kismet
(1955).
1945 * Pat Jennings, Northern Ireland goalkeeper who appeared in
over 1,000 matches.
1964 In the Rivonia trial, Nelson Mandela the 46 year old leader of
the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, was given a life
sentence for sabotage. Seven other defendants, were also given life
prison sentences
1975 Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was barred from holding
office for six years after she was found guilty of electoral
corruption. But Mrs Gandhi rejected calls to resign announcing plans
to appeal to the Supreme Court.
1979 A man-powered aircraft pedalled across the English Channel by
American Bryan Allen.
1986 Derek Hatton, the controversial deputy leader of Liverpool
Council, refused to attend his disciplinary hearing in London. He
was thrown out of the Labour Party for belonging to the leftwing
Militant faction.
1987 Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II was made the
Princess Royal.
1987 Margaret Thatcher obtained her third term as British Prime
Minister.
1997 The law lords decided by a 4-1 majority former Home Secretary
Michael Howard acted illegally when he raised the minimum sentence
imposed on the Bulger killers. The boys future now rests with the
current Home Secretary, Jack Straw.
