1819 * John Couch Adams, English astronomer who discovered the
planet Neptune in 1841.
1878 * Francisco Pancho Villa, Mexican revolutionary.
1884 US Civil War hero Gen. William T Sherman refused the Republican
nomination for president.
1926 * Bill Hayes, US singer who had the hit song 'The Ballad of
Davy Crockett'.
1928 * Tony Richardson, English theatre and film director.
1944 There were momentous liberation celebrations as the people of
Rome crowded onto the streets to welcome the victorious Allied
troops under US commanding officer Lieutenant General Mark Clark,
who led
the final offensive.
1963 In an embarrassing sex scandal. Secretary of State for War, John
Profumo, resigned admitting he lied to Parliament about his
relationship with 21-year-old call girl Christine Keeler.
1967 Israeli forces launched a pre-emptive strike on Egypt and
destroyed nearly 400 Egypt-based military aircraft. The attack
followed a build-up of Arab military forces along the Israeli
border.
1968 Senator Robert Kennedy shot and seriously wounded by
Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan shortly after giving a victory speech in a
Los Angeles hotel.
1972 The Duke of Windsor was laid to rest and many World leaders
attended the funeral in Windsor of the former King of England who
abdicated in 1936.
1989 In Poland, Solidarity defeated the Communists, a remarkable
success in the country's first elections since WW2.
1981 US The Centres for Disease Control published the first report
about the disease (later become known as AIDS).
1992 Almost treble! New figures showed a huge increase in the number
of people having their water supplies cut off for failing to pay
their bills. Water companies have now been warned they must take
into account their customers' ability to pay before cutting off
supplies.
